Captain's Fishing Reports

St Simons Island Fishing Report January 2019

While a good many folks across the country have stowed fishing gear, winterized boats and eagerly await the spring, many anglers here in the Southeast are full throttle! For those in the know, cool weather can really bunch up the fish. With average daytime temperatures hovering around 60, degrees, the conditions can actually be quite comfortable! We’ve had success this past month with live bait, plastics, plugs and flies. This time of year redfish, trout, and sheepshead are all fair game and plentiful. Typically we will target speckled trout in 5-20 ft. depths, but in warmer days, these fish often slide up shallower. Most of the redfish we target are often very shallow on either side of low tide. Mudflats, rip rap, fallen timber and oyster mounds have held fish consistently these past few weeks. Sheepshead are holding tight to anything man made that has barnacle growth. Jetties and older docks have worked best. This winter as we have had a good dose of fresh rain water influx, the sheeps have dropped deeper, to take advantage of the higher salt content. 12-15 feet depths have worked best for us. These trends should continue thru February. We wish everybody a Happy New Year and look forward to seeing you on the water.
