Captain's Fishing Reports

St Simons Island Fishing Report May 16, 2018

As of this moment I am beginning to think we are in the throws of a tropical depression. We’ve rescheduled a few trips due to weather and crossing our fingers we can fish thru this as May is booked fairly solid. Before this current weather pattern (rain!) spring was doing it’s thing both offshore and inshore. Bull reds, sea bass, Cobia, kingfish, Spanish mackerel, and spadefish all were being caught offshore. Inshore, trout and flounder were biting well. Redfish were scattered, and our warm water species such as jacks, lady fish, blue fish and even tarpon have started to show. And of course sharks. The Golden Isles are a favorite breeding zone for a variety of these toothy critters. Going forward, the tides will slow down as the moon begins to fill back up. This will present cleaner water, although these heavy rains will have anglers scrambling to find these clean water sweet spots! There are a couple of things that will help anglers when Mother Nature adds rain to the scene. The use of noisy presentations such as popping corks, blade baits and topwater plugs will help shorten the search!
