Captain's Fishing Reports

March 17, 2018

With winter wrapping up and the vernal equinox fast approaching, the spring “transition” will be in full swing. March brought the usual suspects with fluctuating temperatures and lots of wind. Unlike February and January where many trout and redfish were schooled tight, March has the fish scattered a tad. The good news is that with warming water temps, we get an influx of more species. Sheepshead, black drum, whiting and flounder have all been showing up!

Fishing

Many restaurants and anglers alike are finding out that black drum in the 3-8lb. range are excellent table fare. With very firm flesh, these delicious tasting fish, can be cooked in a variety of ways! Drum feed heavily on crustaceans, but we recently caught a good one on a Sloan Brothers Swimbait. We’ve actually relied heavily on plastic swimbaits, live shrimp, and live mud minnows the entire month of March so far. Going forward, one of the best bets will be fishing for whiting. While whiting do not grow very large (10-14” avg.) they also are very good eating, and this is the time of the year when they school in large numbers! We still have a few days open in April and May, but book early as they are filling fast! Many anglers are booking in May for that illusive Triple Tail!
